People are keeping their dreams closer this year than they did in 2008. They're husbanding their hope. They need every bit of it to get through the day. --Charles Pierce

Yesterday, I started the first in a three-part series called the "Morneau Chronicles." Over the course of this week, I plan to approach the Justin Morneau situation from a few different angles. In part one of the piece, I examined the "ideal results" for him and the Twins. This would mean Morneau coming back completely healthy and performing close to the level he has shown in the past. Today's second part of the series will look at what will happen if Morneau is relegated to playing the role of designated hitter in 2012. In the final portion of the series for tomorrow, the topic will revolve around what will happen to the Twins if Morneau's injuries push him towards retirement.
President Barack Obama, meanwhile, is expected to put a strong emphasis on his own K-12 agenda and achievements—including such signature programs as the Race to the Top and a waiver plan for unpopular provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act—as his re-election effort gains steam. Dale Cramer spent his formative years traveling the world as an Army brat, then settled in Georgia at the age of fifteen when his father retired.
Bandit troubles intensify as Caleb Bender's family tries to settle into their new life in 1920s Paradise Valley. When El Pantera kidnaps Rachel and leaves her brother, Aaron, for dead, Jake Weaver and the Mexican native Domingo pursue the bandit leader to his mountain stronghold in a hopeless rescue attempt. Jake and Domingo manage to escape with Rachel, with the bandits hot on their trail. In a desperate attempt to avoid recapture, Domingo puts himself squarely in harm's way, giving Jake and Rachel time to get away. This is not the quiet life Caleb Bender envisioned when he led his family out of Ohio. What is a father to make of his daughter's obvious affection for a man outside the fold? And how will a pacifist Amishman like Caleb respond to the events that threaten his family and their way of life?

"...The Americans cannot possibly know what we found at the cabin, but they are tracking us this moment, I am afraid. Without the letter, they stumble in darkness. But not for long." He bent toward Kozlov, who tensed even more. "You must be quick," Andreyev ordered. "And this time, Evgeny, you cannot fail."

The 2012 Hall of Fame announcement was made earlier today and the only man to be selected by the Baseball Writers Association of America was Barry Larkin. The second place finisher is a familiar name to fans of the Twins, Jack Morris. The St. Paul native finished 48 votes shy of getting the ultimate honor in baseball. He received 66.7% of the vote and a player needs to receive 75% to get their plaque up with the other greats of the game.

Then when I went to the Lake with friend Bryson on Friday, I gave the sleigh three coats of gold spray paint and let dry. I grabbed the lid from my good 502 in the kitchen.
Today’s interview is with Elizabeth from Inspired by Elizabeth Etsy Shop. Her shop is full of gorgeous steampunk jewelry – something she began making quite by accident!

Tell us about your store. What kind of items do you offer?
Inspired by Elizabeth is an eclectic mix of old world soul and contemporary upcycled pieces. I create Steampunk Rings & necklaces using vintage watch pieces, jewel earrings using vintage glass & rhinestones, and contemporary pieces with a vintage feel. I love the idea of taking something that has been discarded and breathing new life into it. It is the rare store that a granddaughter and a grandmother would love to shop at.
How long have you had an interest in steampunk and making jewelry?
I have always loved vintage jewelry and perusing through antique shops. I was lucky to have been given some jewelry pieces by my grandmother before she died which I cherish. I wanted to be able to emulate that style & quality found in older jewelry pieces. The reason we have antique shops is because the goods that were produced many years ago were of such a superior quality that we are able to cherish them today. It often makes me wonder what antique shops will carry in the future from this time period.
How did you get started? Did you start by experimenting around, or did you take a class and go from there?
I got started by accident. I never intended to have my own business and sell Steampunk Jewelry. I was working as a registered nurse on the night shift with two kids and a wonderful husband when I began experiencing severe back pain. In short I ended up herniating three discs and in time lost my job due to my inability to function as I once did. My mobility became very limited so walking the long halls at a hospital was no longer an option.

I began making jewelry because I needed something to occupy my mind and time while I recovered. Plus not having a job meant I probably shouldn’t go out and buy earrings. I checked out books online from the library on jewelry making and my sweet husband would pick them up for me. I also watched videos online and just began experimenting. Over time I began sharing pictures of my creations on Facebook and through friends was introduced to Etsy.
Thinking like a nurse I began making lanyards. I used the money I made to invest in more supplies. I began using parts from vintage watches to create necklaces. One day I was looking at Google analytics and saw that customers were searching for “steampunk” and coming across my store. I had never even heard of the term before but there it was. I was creating Steampunk Jewelry.
Are there any particular mediums you like working with?
I am very tactile so I just love getting my hands on a vintage watch and taking it apart. I also love trying to find uses for the parts I discard. Soldering has been a fun challenge for me. I think I like using a torch a bit too much!
Is there anything you eventually want to get in to and master?
I would love to take some jewelry making classes. I am lucky enough to have here in Albuquerque Rio Grande, and they offer many wonderful classes. I need to add that to my long list of things to do.

"I think we serve our country first by standing for people who believe in conservative principles, and doing everything in our power to promote an agenda that does not include President Obama’s agenda." --uttered by an extraordinarily insensitive little man who, in spite of his seeming inconsequence, could become the next fucking pretzeldent of the united snakes.
One of the most intriguing story lines to follow for the Twins in 2012 is the health and productivity of Justin Morneau. There are so many different ways his situation could play out on and off of the field. Will he be his old productive self next year? Are the concussions going to relegate him to being a DH? Or in a worst-case scenario, is the career of Morneau going to be forced to come to an abrupt end? All of these situations have a chance to play themselves out during the 2012 season and Twins fans will be watching the health of the former MVP with high regard.

Braided Jeans Wreath
I originally wrote this braided jeans wreath tutorial as a guest post on Wildflowers and Whimsy several months ago. Many of you who have read my blog before know I love to repurpose, sometimes even using non-perishable trash when creating funky little craft projects. So whenever you see one of those big food packages, think about what you can turn it into instead of more trash!
I used the above as a make shift wreath form and also used a bunch of shoulder pads to get more cushion between my make shift wreath forms. (I always cut shoulder pads out of my clothing cuz I have broad shoulders). I used Mod Podge to glue the shoulder pads between the cardboard so they wouldn’t wiggle around and try to escape.
Next comes the long strand I had braided using old jeans. I had originally braided this for a shabby chic Christmas tree garland.
I glued an end of the strand on my wreath form and secured it with a clothespin. Then I slowly wound it around my wreath form. The cardboard form might show through, so before wrapping the braided jeans, you can wrap the form with a flimsier material underneath that is close to the color of your jeans. You can also wind the jeans braid around a couple times.
Here is another wreath using different colored jeans. The little decorations I tied on with raffia are wood cut outs I painted or … more cardboard I cut out and painted.

No, John, no one thinks or cares whether or not you are a zealous advocate of anything. When we do think of you (which is only when you make "serious" legal arguments that send Ollie Holmes and Earl Warren pulsating violently in their graves), we see in your eyes and hear in your voice the death of America, doomsday, the end. Some think me a zealous advocate of executive power, and often I am when it comes to national security issues. But I think President Obama has exceeded his powers by making a recess appointment for Richard Cordray (whom I respect and have no problems with as a nominee) to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Any private party can challenge this nomination by refusing to obey any regulation issued by the agency as the act of an unconstitutional officer. As a result, this may be the first time that Richard Epstein and I get to represent someone in court together! [Someone Must Torture John Yoo]
Sometimes I look out my window at the beauty here and I get so emotional. Having subsisted for so long in Inbredville, I forgot what it was like to be alive. We are so happy here! We also walk around a lot in this city – weather permitting. Some days we even walk about five miles. When we go to get groceries, that’s usually a 2.5 mile walk.
Thanks to all of you who commented and emailed regarding my Christmas Without Family. I know next year is going to be surrounded by friends, though this year I was surrounded by my virtual friends. Thank you!
Next year, my house will at least be in shape enough to invite others over.
Speaking of getting the house more and more in shape, I splurged and bought a compact refrigerator. I figured that I probably had that mild case of food poisoning due to no frig. It dawned on me food that is frozen, thawed, frozen, and thawed again gets hinky, especially if it’s a meat product, so with the new found higher credit level on my credit card, I purchased one. No sense in risking getting sick again. The thing is, some of the food is still frozen from last week’s single digit temps. Even the pickles are frozen still, and we’ve had four days near 40 degrees. Having a frig is soooo delightful, even if it’s a wee small one. I went ahead and purchased one of those mini frigs that have no freezer, so we have more space for regular food.
I’ve also signed up for an online class to be a social media manager. It’s something I’ve been wanting to learn for awhile, so I’m really excited about it. Hopefully I can get some clients soon.
Plus, it’s great knowledge to have to promote my own stuff, though I have a block when it comes to marketing my own self. I’ve found other people have a similar block. What is it they say…painters are the ones who have houses that need painting?
I’ll also be starting a FREE online ezine soon geared towards entrepreneurs. It will be different from my previous attempt at an ezine in that it will include articles from kicka$$ world class entrepreneurs who are more than happy to share their info, so I’ll have plenty of content to choose from. These are movers and shakers that I’ve had the wonderful experience of listening to these past couple months from various webinars and teleseminars. Anyway, I won’t have to worry if I’ll have contributors for the next issue because these people have articles already written and ready to share. Plus, this ezine will be different in that it’s delivered via email and won’t be available online until months later, so it will have a target audience – those who are ready to stop dreaming and start doing. For those who are already doing, they’ll learn some great tips from the “Who’s Who” of entrepreneurs. After all, no one is ever an expert; we should always be learning.

… been without internet since Wednesday Dec 28th. It is about 3pm on the 30th. Verizon has had their towers crash for data in several areas of the country. We are lucky, we are in one of those areas.
I am writing this in hopes that we are back on line before the First of the year.
We had a very nice Christmas.. Lots of Indiana family around. We did miss our "North Dakota" family though… all of you!
01/02/2012: It is snowing, windy and cold. A good day to stay home and watch TV.
We are watching the Rose Parade as we have traditionally for too many years to remember! Just the same as the Rose Bowl game. I'll be rooting for the Oregon Ducks this year.
GO DUCKS!!!!
We still do not have Internet service. Very bad, Verizon! We have been told that it is some kind of system wide problem in the mid west and they will be working on it on monday. Ya, sure!
Yesterday (Sunday) we hosted a dinner for family. A informal affair with Ham and fixin's the guests brought. Let's see, Kay, Joy, Elinor, Bill and Jerry & Jo-an Walls all attended. Carol Clem was intending to come but we were experiencing very high winds (50 mph gusts) and she was not comfortable driving in those conditions. I don't think I would have been either. The card table was set up and the games began after dinner.
It's the halftime for the RoseBowl and the game is all tied up 28 all and it is 6:45 PM. I'll put this to bed and hope I can get it posted tomorrow.
01/06/2012 Wow! It's 1730 and I've got my self back on the Internet. We had a very pleasant last 2 days with a visit from our Illinois cousins, Richard and Nikki Mitts. We really had a grand time with them. We also discovered our wedding anniversaries were on the same day. Neat, huh? We are tentatively planning a get together for that date..

(CNSNews.com) – Carney said the president wants to work with Congress, but if the House and Senate don’t, Obama will.Related articles
“He’s going to take the actions that he can take using his executive authority to help the cause here, to help Americans deal with this challenging economy. And they can be small, medium or large actions and they don’t have to be just executive authority actions,” Carney continued. “They can be things we can do working with the private sector. So he’ll pursue all tracks.”
Carney added the president still would like to work with Congress.
“But it is not accurate to suggest that he doesn’t want to engage with Congress and that he won’t engage with Congress,” Carney said. “He wants to continue to work with Congress. He and his advisors believe there will be opportunities to cooperate with Congress this year. We believe, as a purely political matter, that some members of Congress that have pursued an obstructionist path may begin to see it in their political interest to actually demonstrate to their constituents that they can get some things done.”
